I just purchased a Woods GTC 52 inch tiller. It works great on my JD 2210.
I wanted to check the oil level last night and could not find in the manual how mich oil should be in the "chain" box. I opened the top vent cap and see oil maybe 2/3 down the case. THe lower plug beld oil as soon at it was loosened. Is there a preferred level?
The manual says there should be oil of course but does not seem to indicate how much.
Any help for me?
ALSO - on top of the transfer case on the tiller is another plug/vent. Do I need to oil that or does it get its oil from the chain case?

We had a friend who recently purchased a KK 60" tiller and he had the same questions about fuild levels in the drive boxes. On the side gear box there was a small check plug about half way down that should have fuild up to that level. The top transmission gearbox seemed to be a different story. The manual said to fill to no more than half full. Over filling this box could cause damage to the oil seals and damage to the gearbox. I'm not sure what the difference between the Woods and KK is but there should be someone here with that information. Good Luck ....

The rule of thumb for all of those dual plug type gearboxes is to fill from the top until it pours out of the side, at that point it's "full".

Another "rookie" question. If I fill the gear/chain box until the oil runs out, how do I empty it when I want to change out all the oil? It seems like oil lower than the plug will never be drained. Or do I need to tip the unit in some manner? ....

I stopped at my Woods dealer and he suggested that when draining the oil simply pull the lower plug and roll the unit backwards to drain the oil. Anybody have experience with that method? ....
